Discover Armenian historical sites the Areni-1 Cave and Noravank Monastery from the comfort of your phone. Explore ancient Armenian sites documented through the My Armenia program, a joint partnership between USAID, the Smithsonian, and the people of Armenia. My Armenia builds on the Smithsonian’s expertise in research and curation to better understand and share Armenia’s cultural heritage. As part of these efforts, My Armenia has been working with local partners in the Armenian region of Vayots Dzor to document two key cultural heritage sites: - Areni-1 Cave: The Areni-1 Cave Complex was first investigated in 2007 and has provided valuable insight into the pre-history of the region and the people who lived there 6,000 years ago. The excavations at Areni-1 have shown evidence of burial pots containing the crania of juveniles, well-preserved plant remains, and the oldest leather shoe ever discovered. The site has also revealed a wine press and other winemaking technology, which makes it one of the oldest known locations associated with winemaking. - Noravank Monastery: Noravank Monastery dates back to the 13th and 14th centuries. At the..

Create your own collage art based on the incredible works of American artist Romare Bearden (1911-1988). In 1977, Romare Bearden created a series of collages inspired by the ancient poet Homer and his epic story "The Odyssey." Bearden believed that “all of us from the time we begin to think are on an odyssey.” The Romare Bearden collage app, developed by the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service in conjunction with the national traveling exhibition "Romare Bearden: A Black Odyssey," was created with Bearden's quote in mind. With this lively, colorful, and highly engaging app, you can remix works from Bearden's original series to create your own unique works of art, and express your personal journey. Choose from a variety of Bearden’s backdrops and layer in shapes and forms from other collages. Or cut your own shapes, add personal photos, change the colors of various elements and resize them. You can also add your words and your descriptions. Music played a big role in Bearden’s life and his art, so the app also incorporates sound. While you build your collages, you..

What does it take to be a rocket scientist? You are a rocket engineer for a space exploration company. Your job is to design a series of rockets and attempt suborbital, orbital, and escape velocity missions. Successfully designing and launching a rocket into space is extremely difficult, expensive, and full of tough choices. Rocket components such as shape, propellant, control system, and staging affect the way a rocket flies. With each new mission, you must take into consideration each component’s reliability, cost, and performance. Have you chosen a powerful enough propellant? Is your control system prone to high failure rates? Failure is not an option here! The decisions you make will directly affect the success or failure of your rocket – and your space exploration company – because this is rocket science. With the Smithsonian's National Air and Space Museum's Rocket Lab, you can: - Build a virtual rocket by choosing its shape, number of stages, propellant, and control mechanism - Personalize your rocket with your name - Launch your rocket and watch how well it flies - Modify your..
