The PRIME application is a smartphone-based application used at the University of Minnesota Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences for a research study, known as EPI-MINN. The PRIME Application is being studied to see whether it can enhance motivation in people with early psychosis. The EPI-MINN study enrolls participants who have been recently diagnosed with a psychosis spectrum disorder, prodromal psychosis, or who are deemed at Clinical High Risk for developing psychosis. Participants in the PRIME Application will interact with their peers and a coach in the PRIME Community over a period of 12 weeks. Participants will work towards self-identified goals with the support of the virtual community as well as with motivation coaches. Coaches will provide tailored interventions to enhance motivation, and post daily discussion topics to the PRIME community to encourage interaction between members. This application is developed with support from the NIMH Early Psychosis Intervention Network (EPINET) Grant, R01MH120589, awarded to Drs. Sophia Vinogradov and Piper Meyer-Kalos. PhysiAware is an app designed to collect data from physiological sensors (heart rate, galvanic skin response, motion) worn by participants, as well as responses to short surveys of participants and their GPS location during research studies. Data collected by the app are transmitted to a secure research server for subsequent analysis and deleted from the smartphone. The use of this app in research is subject to Institutional Review Board (IRB) approval and is available only to participants that have been enrolled in an IRB-approved research study and have gone through the process of informed consent. This app is not available for public use outside of a research study context. In order to use the app, an enrolled participant will need to enter a code issued by the research study during the enrollment process. This GPS location information collected by this app together with physiological sensor data will be used to detect and predict situations when study participants are likely to engage in certain types of recurring behavior (e.g., smoking a cigarette or using other tobacco products).

SALSA (System for Automated Language and Speech Analysis) is an application for administering and collecting the results of cognitive test batteries such as picture description, picture naming, spontaneous narrative, and verbal fluency. The results of such tests can be assistive in assessment of conditions that affect cognition, including neurodegenerative disease and neurotoxic medications. SALSA is designed for test administrators, and allows for selection of the project, subject, and visit before allowing the test administrator to hand off the device to a subject to respond to visual and audio stimuli. SALSA uses a web service to administrate projects, subjects, and tests. The web service also receives the recordings made in tests in order to perform processing to determine analysis results. Our work involves students directly, and is conducted in such a way as to produce innovative research on the intersection of second language learning, digital technology and cultural studies. The UMD MOBLL French Pronunciation App was designed and built through the collaboration of students and faculty at the University of Minnesota Duluth. According to research on L2 pronunciation, just getting the speaker to hear their errors is 80% of the work. This app was designed to address that 80%. While there are numerous versions of acceptable French, we have opted for the French that is taught in most language programs. We will add more varieties as time permits.
