My daughter was diagnosed with dyslexia and this app shows her the phonics sounds along with a picture for the words she is building. It is great in the way that she wants to play the game and laughs at all the videos that goes with the sounds. In addition to her reading struggles she also has problems with writing and she is asked to follow the path to make the letters correctly as well. She doesn’t seem to realize that she is learning and playing at the same time. She is already asking if there is a hairy phonics 3 as well.

My son loves it and had really helped him with his phonics.

Syllable Swipe: Our games are designed to help children of all abilities learn to read and spell. They are aligned with Structured Literacy Programs such as Orton-Gillingham based approaches. Structured Literacy is an explicit, systematic approach to reading instruction that teaches phonology, sound-symbol association, syllables types and division rules, and morphology to assist in decoding and encoding strategies. The systematic and cumulative organization of material moves from basic to complex in order to master the concepts. Syllable Types are a crucial element of Structured Literacy that help students associate vowel spellings with sounds. Syllable Swipe is a multi-sensory learning game to help your students learn the concepts of syllable types. After choosing two syllable types, you are presented with a monosyllabic word that fits one of the two chosen types. You then swipe to indicate which of the two types it fits, with the goal of increasing accuracy with each play session. Your students will swipe their way to mastering the 6 syllable types!

The What’s Changed? skill builder has been specifically designed to develop students’ phonemic awarenessthe ability to discern the sounds, and the sequence of sounds, within a word. Phonemic awareness is a critical skill for learning to read and can be improved with practice What’s Changed? focuses on developing phonemic awareness with vowel sounds and consonant blends through exercises that require students to listen to two non-words and identify what changed between the two words. Students develop the core foundational skills that make up phonemic awareness by identifying the type of change that occurred, including: - identifying the sound that changed (‘zat’ to ‘zad’) - substituting a new letter for the sound that changed (‘feld’ to ‘fald’) - specifying the letter for a sound that was added or omitted (‘strek’ to ‘stek’) - switching two letters for sounds that were switched (‘blist’ to ‘blits’) Students with poor phonemic awareness skills often make these types of errors when reading. What’s Changed? also develops segmentation and blending skillsthe ability to segment a word into its individual sounds and then blend the sounds together..

My daughter loves Hairies! This app is a great supplement to what she is learning with the full Nessy program.

Was really hoping for a bit more to this game but it's the same thing over and over which caused my daughter to lose interest pretty quick. Would have liked a trial to test out the app. Also no sound on my iPad mini which doesn't help in the learning of sounds. Not worth $3... maybe .99
