Nihongo App DESCRIPTION

Nihongo is an offline Japanese dictionary, flashcard app, and reading assistant, designed to make the best use of the time you dedicate to studying Japanese.

Our dictionary is made to find what you’re looking for fast, with the words Japanese speakers actually use at the top of every search result, and every word marked as “common”, “uncommon”, or “rare”.

“Clippings”, our reading assistant, is what makes Nihongo stand apart from other dictionaries. Paste in Japanese text from a website, email, an eBook, or anywhere else, and we’ll add furigana or romaji to every word. We also enable you to tap on any word to see its definition. This will truly change the way you read Japanese. And now, you can get the same experience right in Safari using our Safari extension.

Personal experience (as well as a good deal of research in second-language acquisition) has shown us that the words that you’re most likely to remember are the words that you’re encountering naturally. To this end Nihongo automatically draws from your search history and clippings to compile flashcard decks filled with words for which you already have context. This makes it easy to study both the words you looked up during Japanese class, and those that appear in your favorite song or videogame. And by adding notes to the back of flashcards you can further connect each vocabulary word to your personal contextual understanding.

Kanji flashcards prompt you to draw the missing kanji from the words you’re studying, creating stronger connections between the characters and their real-world use. Built-in kanji decks give you 2 or 3 key words to study for each kanji.

This app is only possible because of the JMDict (edrdg.org) and Tatoeba (tatoeba.org) projects. I highly encourage you to support these incredible projects that make apps like Nihongo possible!

I really like this new handed writing functions it makes search very convenient and efficient

The

This app is an excellent supplemental resource in my quest to learn Japanese. Highly recommended!

Japan202..

I’m still in the basics but this dictionary is very helpful. I’m learning more vocabulary and kanji every day as well as grammar. Soon I will find Japanese friends on a app so I can help them with English and they can help me with Japanese. There must always be a balance in any relationship where the other person has something just as valuable to offer that way there is always harmony. I’m not a English professor and my English grammar isn’t the strongest but my goal is to help someone become fluent in English while I become fluent in Japanese.

Emperor

I’ve been waiting a very long time for this app to have handwriting included. There are so many times when I’m in a situation and I love using this app, but using the radical look up just takes too much time, and I have to use another app. Now I can read magazines and play video games without having to separate my flashcards from my look up app!

atraver

Love the links to other words in example sentences, “elements” that make up kanji, and the new search-as-you-type functionality. Subscriptions and a lofty lifetime purchase are a bit of a miss, for me, but I suppose that’s where everyone is headed. For the type of functionality a dictionary provides, it’s a tough sell, but to each their own. Would love to see an “identify the kanji by drawing” feature like Shirabe offers, and explanations/links for the various verb conjugation forms.

iffyxrsr..

I really like using this app. It has great organized flashcards as well as a dictionary all in one and I find all its features to be super useful. I think the flashcards are great because they include writing flashcards also, which is super helpful. The only thing I wish this app had was notifications or something because I always forget until nighttime to do them.

asrlansa..

Fuera fantastico que el ocr pudiera copiar los texto para yo guardarlo en notas, pero aun asi me encanta la app son de los pocos app que su japones es buenisimo. がんばろう!! :D

Very easy to use, very comprehensive. It sure beats looking up in Kanji in Nelson's dictionary.... I think it’s great. Update months later: it’s still a great app!! Five stars.

Yoyo4bum..

Fantastic app to study Japanese! I use it everyday and I’m grateful every time.

Skulthug..

This is hands down the best Japanese dictionary app on the app store. The free version already comes with many great features such as animated kanji stroke order, tons of example sentences, and conjugation charts for each word, but the paid version takes it to a whole new level, and it’s reasonably priced too. The paid version allows you to take photos of japanese text and paste them into the app, which will then highlight words in the text for you to click on and it will give you their meaning. You can then click on them again to go to their dictionary entry for more information. This feature alone has made my japanese learning experience so much easier and faster. Even better, premium allows you to turn any dictionary entry into a flashcard with the click of a single button, so you don’t have to spend hours writing your own flashcards. Premium also comes with a timed-repetition based review system for your flashcards, similar to Anki, where cards you’re less familiar with are reviewed more frequently, but as you get better at each word they show up less and less. This ensures your flashcard practice is used efficiently by targeting words you’re less familiar with. Premium also comes with the ability to add furigana and clickable dictionary entries to japanese safari webpages. This makes reading practice online much easier. These are only a few of the great features this app has to offer, but there are many more. All in all, i couldn’t rate this app high enough, and if i could give it more than 5 stars i would. It’s also developed by just one guy and despite being a one person project, it is exceptionally well put together. It is the highest of professional quality and you can feel the love and passion he puts into the app, which is why i decided to support him by purchasing the life-time subscription for $50, and it has been well worth it. To end, this app is amazing, if you’re serious about learning Japanese, this is an essential purchase.

Brandea1..

When I first purchased I was a bit skeptical on whether the one-time full purchase was worth it, but this app is definitely one of the best when it comes to Japanese vocabulary. It has a clean UI, it’s easy to use, and has extremely helpful writing/flashcard sections that truly drill memorization. The developer, Chris, is also extremely responsive to feedback and is clearly passionate about improving and maintaining the quality of the app. Highly recommend purchasing if you’re serious about learning Japanese. It’s such a quick and easy to use resource; having it on hand at all times for refreshers, vocabulary drills, or dictionary lookups is truly worth it.

Reachfh9..

I am using this to read manga for learning Japanese. I do a screen capture and load it into the app, which recognizes text. I can then look up words. On the whole, it works quite well, and is the best I have found. It ends up getting about 80% of the text recognized by OCR, particularly good for kanji. The dictionary is good as well. Things that are not working as well as I would like: * It tends to translate word by word (or short phrase), which makes it miss some phrases * The missing 20% of the text that it can’t recognize for OCR, sometimes inexplicably, which exacerbates the problem above of not correctly translating a phrase. * The number of clicks required to read page after page is high. It would be nice if this use case was streamlined. I generally pair it with DeepL for whole sentence translation. That is pretty amazing, but doesn’t do OCR. It would be great to be able to make it easier to e.g. copy all the text found, or do some deeper integration.

I love you *smooches

SV001

I love being able to study kanji by school grade and JLPT level. I really like that the app tests you on stroke order as well. Also, being able to add furigana and word definitions to web pages is such a great experience. This app is hands down the best Japanese learning tool that I have and I highly recommend it to all learners. The app is always getting updates/upgrades and is well worth the money spent!

Tsalagi1..

This is an incredibly useful tool for learning Japanese. A must have app in my opinion.

Dann

This app does not function as advertised in any way without paying the subscription. Skip this app if you are looking for a quick free use of it.

samedeep..

The OCR is very accurate, but every other aspect needs development to compete with other MUCH cheaper dictionary apps . There is no analyzer to dump the OCR text to a list, for starters. No handwriting input. The whole things feels unfinished, and the pricing is downright silly. Yomiwa costs $13 one time and does way more, though with an uglier interface. If you don’t need OCR, Midori is also much better.

SuttonLo..

Essential for any Japanese language learner! You can literally screenshot a page of Japanese text, and every single kanji or word will be highlighted that leads you to a definition of that word, automatic stroke order animation, and a hundred other things I haven’t even begun to explore yet. Best part? The Lifetime Pro membership is $50 FOR LIFE. Thank you to whoever made this app. I want to be you when I grow up.

12manyco..

This is a neat app with lots of features like flashcards, example sentences, and stroke order. However, it's very pricey and there are many other apps with almost the same features that are free. Shirabe Jisho, for example, is almost the same app and it even uses the same example sentences. Shirabe Jisho has added flashcards for different JLPT and grade level kanji. For now, I will save my $50 for the lifetime subscription.

AlexDFox

An excellent free dictionary, but the upgrades are totally worth the price to jump into. I love taking pictures and adding to a deck. I’ve been using pics to create my own flash cards. The testing is fun too. It’s also nice having a backup, in case you don’t have asset to the internet.
