WHAT'S NEW

In this release you'll find a customizable post feed, enhanced post submission, and new ways to follow groups, people, and watersheds. The Water Reporter experience is now more consistent across platforms, meaning that features once confined to your desktop are available in the app. Now you can create and edit groups, data sources, and maps directly from your phone. This release also corrects a bug that prevented volunteer contributors from accessing data collection forms.

The Water Reporter App DESCRIPTION

Water Reporter users discover, track, and examine pollution issues that threaten ecosystem and human health via user-initiated monitoring programs.

Water quality impacts our daily life and the health of our natural world. Addressing pollution threats can feel daunting: pollution sources often elude even the best scientists, and solutions take time — and resources — to make an impact. Despite all of the obstacles of combating threats to our watersheds, the environmental community is up to the challenge!

With Water Reporter we’ve created a platform where everyone participating in environmental monitoring can come together to collect geolocated data to shed light on watershed quality issues and publish the results as data-driven solutions to pollution problems.

Water Reporter is built and maintained by The Commons, a 501c(3) organization creating meaningful software solutions for the environmental sector.

Key features:

• Former web-only tools now available on compatible Apple mobile devices.
• Multiple options to collect and manage your water quality monitoring data.
• Build mobile-ready, location-aware data collection forms.
• Collect station-specific data via digital forms.
• Build data sources with your own protocols.
• Define your own scores and thresholds to indicate status and health for monitoring stations or parameters.
• Build portable maps to embed in websites and share through your media channels.
• Integrate data from the national network of USGS stream gauges.
• Maintain ownership of your data with downloadable data sources.

HerpMapper is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization designed to gather and share information about reptile and amphibian observations across the planet. Using the HerpMapper mobile app, you can create records of your herp observations and keep them all in one place. In turn, your data is made available to HerpMapper Partners – groups who use your recorded observations for research, conservation, and preservation purposes. Your observations can make valuable contributions on the behalf of amphibians and reptiles. Using your phone’s camera and GPS capabilities, the HerpMapper mobile app creates a ‘voucher record’ of your find, incorporating photos of the animal, and recording the locationFor calling frogs and toads, the app enables you to record and include a sound file in a recordThe date and time of day are also recordedThe app features a searchable database of the common and scientific names for all of the world’s herpetofauna, and you can search for either type of name by entering just a fragmentThe newest version of the app allows you to add multiple photos and soundfiles to a record The HerpMapper mobile app..

The Smoke Sense mobile app is designed to pilot a citizen science study about the impacts of wildfire smoke exposure on health. Citizen scientists can use the app to learn about wildland fires and smoke health risks in their area. They can report their health symptoms, and the range of actions they are able or willing to take to improve their health condition or lower their exposure. Users will earn badges each week they participate. If successful, data gathered through Smoke Sense will help EPA researchers and communities determine how smoke impacts our health and productivity and gain important insights needed to develop health risk communication methods during smoke days. The findings from the study will be peer-reviewed for scientific publication and published on the EPA website. Public health officials and air quality managers can use the results to develop strategies to protect public health from wildland fire smoke. The pilot will be conducted during the 2017 wildland fire season until the end of OctoberAt the end of the study, the Smoke Sense app will go offline temporarily for updatesSmoke..

EDDMapS is a mapping system for documenting invasive species distribution. It is fast, easy to use, and doesn't require Geographic Information Systems experienceLaunched in 2005 by the Center for Invasive Species and Ecosystem Health at the University of Georgia, it was originally designed as a tool for state Exotic Pest Plant Councils to develop more complete distribution data of invasive species. EDDMapS goal is to maximize the effectiveness and accessibility of the immense numbers of invasive species observations recorded each year. Why do we care? An invasive species is when a nonnative species causes or is likely to cause economic, environmental harm, or harm to human health. Invasive species negatively impact agriculture, recreation, natural ecosystems, biodiversity, and more. The first step is prevention of nonnative introduction. The second step is to map where the invasive species are found in the introduced area. How does it work? EDDMapS is a platform to document, display, and query the presence of invasive species. A simple, interactive Web interface engages participants to submit their observations or view results through interactive queries into the EDDMapS..

HydroColor is a water quality application that uses the iPhone camera to determine the reflectance of natural water bodies. Using this information, HydroColor can estimate water turbidity (0-80 NTU), concentration of suspended particulate matter (SPM) (g/m^3) and the backscattering coefficient in the red (1/m). IMPORTANT: HydroColor requires the use of an 18% photographers gray card as a reference. Gray cards are widely available at photography shops and online. Visit the supporting website for more information on gray cards. HydroColor has an easy to use interface that guides users through the collection of three images: a gray card image, a sky image, and a water image. To ensure the best results, HydroColor taps into the iPhone’s GPS, gyroscope, and compass to aid users in the collection of these images. After images are collected they can be analyzed immediately. In the analysis of the images, HydroColor calculates the reflectance of the water body in the RGB color channels of the camera. It then uses the reflectance values to determine the turbidity of the water in NTU (nephelometric turbidity units). The data is..

Swimlind..

This app works very poorly with my iPhone 8. Locks up repeatedly. Not very good for me right now.

waterbug..

Really awesome to see the number of organizations and individuals joining to share local water quality observations. It would be good to see easier ways to post reports and curate observations but lots of potential.

catcherc..

The app will not let me save or even create a profile.

I would really like to use this app more but I am a voiceover user and not all of the features are accessible. It would be wonderful if this app could be updated so that it is completely accessible and I could interact more with the community. The idea of the app is great and I look forward to future changes where I will be able to fully take advantage of all of the features this app has to offer.

Scottliv..

Allows the community to be responsible and report positive and negative practices on local waterways.

This is a really interesting app that lets anyone take pictures outdoors. The pictures are automatically geolocated and emailed to local environmental groups that want to keep apprised of activities on their rivers. It's cool because you don't have to do any work to find the environmental groups. It's perfect for using if you see a possible pollution source threatening water quality or something really interesting that you want to share. Plus, there is a website where you scroll through other posts, explore maps and learn about updates on reports you submitted. It's an effortless way for anyone to help protect waterways and watersheds.

Drewgirl..

I tried using Arc/GIS and realized i would need a two week course in learning how to use that application. Water Reporter is so user friendly! I love the drop down menus and the geo tagging feature is marvelous. The best part is being able to read the map created by the reported tags in our county on Water Reporter.org. I love this app. It’s free, it’s point, click and shoot for reporting water issues for the environment.

This is a great tool for water lovers in the Chesapeake watershed to report issues!
