When the weapons fell silent at the end of 1918, Ypres still existed, but just on paper. There was scarcely a house still standing. No one lived in the town anymore.

With this app, you’ll discover how Ypres quickly came back to life and rose like a phoenix from its ashes. It allows you to walk through the devastated and the rebuilt parts of the town. En route you’ll discover the fascinating stories that were played out behind the magnificent façades between the Colaertplein and the Grand’Place.

It is over hundred years ago since the First World War started. The fierce, intense battles left this region completely devastated. Over the years, however, cities and villages were slowly rebuilt and farm fields and woods were restored. The former front lines are no longer obvious in the landscape. And yet, they stir people’s imagination. This app guides you through the region, exploring the Ypres Salient landscape to discover the front lines. 138 memorial trees, dotted across the Ypres Salient, mark the front line in the landscape. They pinpoint the location of the front in 1915–1917. The app helps you discover the memorial trees, and enjoy a view of `then and now’ through aerial photos. Continued use of GPS running in the background can dramatically decrease battery life.

CIRCUS 157 is the code name for a Royal Air Force operation on 5 May 1942. Six bombers escorted by Spitfires are to attack a power station in Lille (Northern France). Technical problems and heavy cloud hamper the operation. On their way back German fighter planes attack. During the ensuing dogfight five Spitfires crash alongside the border between France and Flanders. Four of the five pilots get killed . Two cycling routes bring this forgotten World War 2-story to life. It is a gripping story, with a lot of human tragedy, both in the air and on the ground. Follow the junction points and discover the crashsites, the monuments and the cemeteries of the Circus 157 pilots.

This app helps you explore the war landscape around Ypres. It will immerse you into the First World War and help you unveil the vestiges of battle and the historic sites. More exciting still, the app allows you to virtually walk on top of the front line trenches. So that you experience how incredibly close the front lines were to one other and how dense the trench network was. The landscape still bears many traces of the war, yet often these are only visible to trained eyes. Now that the last personal witnesses of the Great War have passed away, the landscape is the very last witness to this tragic period in the Westhoek. The photos that pilots took from their airplanes, during the war, are a great source to bring the now vanished landscape back to life. Continued use of GPS running in the background can dramatically decrease battery life.
