Caterpillars Count! App DESCRIPTION

Caterpillars Count! is a project that relies on citizen scientists (you!) to help understand some of the most important organisms in our ecosystems—caterpillars and other insects—by conducting surveys of the plants and trees around them.

WHY SURVEY CATERPILLARS?
* Caterpillars are an important food source for birds and other wildlife.
* Some caterpillars have economic and environmental impacts on our forests and crops.
* Caterpillars may provide insight into how climate change is affecting ecosystems around us.

SUBMIT YOUR OBSERVATIONS TO HELP US:
* understand how the abundance of these insects varies from rural country sides to major urban areas,
* and over broad geographic gradients across the globe!
* track how the abundance of caterpillars and other insects varies as the seasons shift from spring into summer.
* track how seasonal variation in caterpillar abundance varies from year to year.

Your observations will be analyzed by scientists, and you can visualize the data submitted by yourself and others through our website. Visit caterpillarscount.unc.edu to learn more!

The Outsmart Invasive Species project is a collaboration between the University of Massachusetts Amherst, the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation (MA DCR) and the Center for Invasive Species and Ecosystem Health at the University of Georgia. The goal of the project is to strengthen ongoing invasive-species monitoring efforts in Massachusetts by enlisting help from citizens. The web- and smartphone-based approach enables volunteers to identify and collect data on invasive species in their own time, with little or no hands-on training. By taking advantage of the increasing number of people equipped with iPhone or digital camera/web technology, this approach will expand the scope of invasive-species monitoring, and is an effort to help control oubreaks of new or emergent invasive species that threaten our environment.
Quick lookup for bird banders
Do you want to quickly find and learn the 4-letter codes which bird banders use to record each species? Do you need a quick reference to look up band sizes used for each species? The Band Codes app gives you quick access to the shorthand codes for the species names, as well as additional information such as band sizes and important notes regarding banding certain species. Bird banding is a common research technique to study migration timing and survival of birds. Birds are captured by a variety of methods and an aluminum band is attached to one of their legs. Each band has a unique number that allows researchers to learn about the birds movements and any physiological changes that may have occurred between the times it was captured. Note: If you are a birder, we suggest that you check out Bird Codes, which is more extensive, including all the species found in the area covered by the American Ornithologists Union. Banding birds is federally regulated, and only those trained and licensed as banders should attempt to catch and band..

Monarch SOS is a field guide for the public as well as a citizen science reporting app. It is the first monarch app developed by scientists that covers monarch identification in all life cycle stages, confusing look-alikes and numerous milkweed species (monarchs' larval host plants), frequently encountered in North America. Monarch SOS is a valuable tool for learning about monarch butterflies, threats they face and how everyone can help bring back the monarchs by making a few simple lifestyle changes. If viceroy and queen butterflies confuse you, quickly learn the differences in the "Compare" section under each butterfly. Keep up with the latest information on monarch conservation efforts and migration news by checking in daily with What's New? The feed is updated every time you open the app, so you'll always be in the loop!
