KQ Dixie App DESCRIPTION

KQ Dixie is a 6-Operator FM synthesizer that is modeled on the synthesizer which appeared on the 1980s. This app can extend my Piano Modoki app.

FM synthesizers make sounds with Frequency Modulation.
FM brings rich and brilliant sounds which are impossible to create with analog one.
It makes very complex waves with simple modulations.
The same method is used for radios.
The synthesizer gained much popularity in the 1980s.

This app lets you make sounds freely with 156 voice parameters.
Almost all parameters but multi-timbral, filter, and delay are compatible with DX7.

No guarantee with 32-bit devices. (It probably works.)
*** There are some UI issues on iPhone 4S. ***
Audio Unit v3 compatible. Multiple-Out is supported when you use “KQ Dixie Multi”.
Audiobus compatible.
Inter-App Audio compatible.
32 algorithms included.
You can manage the hardware DX7 when it is connected with external MIDI cables.
Supports DX7 System Exclusive Messages (SysEx) and syx files.
Supports Zip files. Place Zip files at the app folder instead of extracting them.
Supports micro tuning. The app can load Anamark tuning files (TUN).
Supports external and virtual MIDI.
You may be able to find a lot of patches on the internet.
Multi-timbres and Unisons functions are there.

Yamaha DX7 is a trademark of Yamaha Corporation.
I have no business relations with Yamaha.

Analog modeling synthesizer
Zeeon is a virtual analog synthesizer, powered by an advanced analog circuit modelling engine. We spent a lot of time analysing iconic analog synths, both vintage and modern, to find out which parts of the circuit contribute most to their specific character. We used this knowledge to create a unique synth, with focus on what’s most importantthe pure, organic and detailed sound. Many analog synth emulations sound dull. Not Zeeon. We take care of the entire spectrum range from deep lows to sweet highs. All audio and modulation signals are processed at 176 KHz (4x oversampling). Full manual and audio demos available at the BeepStreet website. Features • Audio Unit v3 and standalone application with a simple polyphonic step sequencer • 2 oscillators with continuously variable waveforms, hard-sync and sub-oscillator. Where is the part where the COSTUMERS get to do stuff? The presets are nice, but whenever you try to edit it sounds awful!

Nosidel

well i got all the Auv3 in the app store starting up from the must expensive to the must cheapest auv3 in the app store , and even though Kq Dixie is on the cheap side, i got to say that KQ Dixie its one of a few top synth in the app store, the sound quality is one of the best with its nice warm analog tone and texture, great for sound designing even though im not a sound designer, but at the same time there is thousands of presets that you can find for free in the web and all of them sounds great which is a mayor plus, so yes i really recommend KQ Dixie as a most have for beginners and pro producers because i can guarantee that KQ Dixie will be one of your must used app/auv3 in your projects.. and with that i want to give a BIG THANK YOU to the developer of this great wonderful synth app 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👍🏻

A really accurate and easy to use DX7 emulator. Love the different themes and the layout, sound is excellent. MIDI mapping seems great too.

Best synth for iPad Perfectly does a DX7, which you can many presets for. Highly recommended!

I am a unprofessional keyboardist who uses iOS soft synths exclusively in liveless performances and unkempt-trailerpark work. I am also a sound destroyer and contaminate all my own sounds.... Testing, testing, testing, sound check.

I was looking at the Volca FM, the Yamaha Reface DX... but now have found my perfect combination in KQ Dixie with the Alesis Q25 midi keyboard with full-size keys. I am new to FM synthesis, interested in sound creation and this app and it’s interface/interaction design is exceptional for learning and playing. Super intuitive to use, fun to play and great for learning FM synth.

TBMisama..

I absolutely love this app! It allows you to have a “DX7” on your iPad, plus it supports AU so you can use it directly in a host app. It makes an awesome editor, especially for the Volca FM; Here’s why: it allows you to design a patch and hear it (unlike Patch Base). When you you import sysex files all operators are on (again, unlike Patch Base). But where it’s really great for the Volca FM is the inclusion of the Velocity slider where the mod wheel usually is. So you know EXACTLY how it will translate to the FM! If you want the slider controlling vibrato instead, you have that option by going to settings. It also uses next to no CPU, even on an iPad Air 1, so it runs very smoothly. My only complaint is that is desperately needs a manual explaining the utilities/ file management. I spent hours figuring out how to create a blank voice bank to store my custom patches to. I put a video on YouTube explaining the process. Search “Creating an Init Voice Bank in KQ Dixie”. I highly recommend this for FM synthesis enthusiasts.

I am a professional keyboardist who uses iOS soft synths exclusively in live performances and studio work. I am also a sound designer and create my own sounds. I don’t use presets. I’ve been needing an excellent DX 7 emulator to properly create 80’s style synth patches, and I’m thrilled to now have one. The learning curve on this one for a programmer is difficult if you’re not used to FM synthesis, and the fact that the user manual is not in English can be a challenge...BUT... The emulation is so similar to the DX7 that you can learn what you need by reading a Yamaha DX7 manual (find PDF online). I’ve already created several patches and am using those to replace my previous sounds created using other types of synths. I see reviews with certain requests...but some may be missing the point that this is a pretty accurate emulation...with the benefits of the original and some of the “flaws” of the original. Example: I love that this uses only sine waves in its operators. Other FM synths use sine plus more complex wave forms. They sound great, but the DX7 only used sine waves and therefore so does KQ Dixie. Fantastic development work here.

Loading and saving presets is really confusing. Params shouldn’t be global imo...Good purchase none the less.

JRSIV197..

Yamaha’s DX7 digital synthesizer was EVERYWHERE in the 1980’s. It’s FM digital synthesis was capable of very unique sounds. Although because of the great difficulty programming the original hardware units, most everyone just used the presets. Those 32 original voices are here too, and have their charm, but the real draw to Dixie is that the thousands upon thousands of voices & patches created by DX7 users over the past 30 years are compatible with the app! Google DX7 patches (sysex format), download the patch or a .zip of patches, import into Dixie via the Files app. That easy. Plus if you want to create new custom patches, I’ve never seen an FM synth that made patch editing easier to grasp. There’s plenty of effects and controls are easy to read & interact with. This app could be 10x more expensive and it’d be well worth it. Highly recommended.

CCliffor..

Love the flat interface. Just show me what I need to know, no fluff.

gmeaucla..

This is a straightforward reproduction of the sounds of the DX7. In all honesty I finally understand how an FM synth works because of this app. I thought I understood FM synthesis, but I really do now, because of this app. I too would like to see ways to share my presets with others and hope that gets implemented in future updates. This is a no-brainer purchase and highly recommend.

ammus

I’m a big fan of both of the musical apps by this creator-absolutely essential applications at an overwhelmingly affordable price! The graphical interface is delightful! It sorta reminds me of old style cartoons- I enjoy returning to it. The sound design is about as intuitive as FM can get- very easy to navigate. And it sounds great! Also works as AU so I can control it with the Bram bro sequencer collection. Fantastic app and my thanks to the developer!

realdawe..

This synth is just about perfect. It faithfully supports all the DX7 sounds that I love, has a clever interface and supports AU. I can’t as for any more than this. Well done!

Dougdi

Amazing for the price! I now have more presets available than I have time in my life to hear them all!

Nitpick

A real six-operator DX7 on your device. And one so easy to edit and program. And works inside so many other apps. Almost makes me want to get a real hardware DX7...almost.

HouseOfH..

The discovery of this app has absolutely made my day! I own the excellent Korg Volca FM, which led me down the rabbit hole of exploring all things DX7 and FM synthesis-related. All you need to know about the DX7 is that there are THOUSANDS of interesting patches all over the web. Most of these were professionally programmed decades ago, and have just been floating around ever since. But until KQ Dixie came along, there was actually no way to PLAY a DX7 patch on iOS. There were apps that would store and send sysex (DX7) files to your Volca FM, but you couldn’t hear what the patch sounded like until it was on an external piece of hardware. That why KQ Dixie is so useful to me. Finally, I have a way to audition this content, identify patches I would like to have on my Volca, and even dabble in some light programming. As it turns out, however, KQ Dixie is a great instrument app in its own right. I really like the clean UI and easy access to the keyboard and all parameters. There are even some neat touches like on-board filters, overdrive, and delay effects. In fact, it’s so good, it might make more sense just to use this app within the iOS ecosystem, rather than capturing sound from an external synth. NOTE: This is a very early review, and there are some understandable bugs with v. 1.0 pertaining to importing .syx and .zip files. The developer is attentive to these, and at least one update has already been submitted. And, to top it all off, KQ Dixie functions as an AU instrument, which makes it infinitely useful in DAW’s which support that functionality, as well as other apps like AUM or Quantiloop that can house AU apps.

Korg

In 2010, we got DXi, but instead of being a DX7 emulator, it is a TX81Z-based app with more waveforms and features. FM4 beat the sound of the DXi. The first 6 operator FM app we got was TF7, but it did not try to be DX7-compatible. Although Phasemaker and NFM are more like the DX7 (and have AU support!), it wasn’t until 2018 that we got a proper DX7 emulator from the same guy behind the hidden gem, KQ Mini Synth. Not only it has a good interface, but it also has a pleasant sound and is compatible with DX7 banks. You can even load zip files full of banks. The digital pantheon of iOS is almost complete! We now have a PPG, a Fairlight, a DX7, a CZ, a Prophet VS, an M1, and a Wavestation all on iOS! I really want a D50 on iOS, please Roland!
