What people are saying about Du Chinese:
“Best app if you’re wanting to increase your vocab and reading ability via language context… nothing beats learning vocabulary through the context of stories. I’ve tried over 30 different Chinese learning apps over the 5 years that I’ve been learning Mandarin. This app is definitely worth the subscription. Try it out”
“A great and straightforward app for learning Chinese through stories. I don’t really like sifting through grammar and vocabulary books or even flashcards. Instead, stories help you learn through imagination and creativity, you immerse yourself into the story and learn the words because you want to understand the story. Great!”
“Great app for developing listening and reading skills. The part that puts it over the top for me is that I can choose traditional characters! It is incredibly hard to find apps, programs, and books that cater to those of us who are studying Mandarin, but are focused on traditional script.”

App REVIEWS

Stphanie

After a year’s patronage of Du Chinese, I can confidently say this app along with its desktop version, were instrumental in my progress. Seems like all the good things have already been noted by other users, but I do want to emphasize a few things. I am so impressed that the hover-definitions show the exact usage and context of the word within the sentence/story. The UX is beautiful and interface is responsive, ability to change fonts (on app) has helped my character recognition immensely, and even the thumbnail graphics are enticing. Most importantly, the content. Regarding the article lessons, I am very impressed at the range of social, cultural, and even entertainment news, all done in a relatively neutral tone. My favorite are the classic stories. I grew up in the US with the likes of Crime and Punishment and the Magic School Bus as cultural references, so it’s quite enlightening and even exciting to have the ancient Chinese classics available, albeit abridged for the eager learner. I use this material (at the moment, it’s the “Romance of the Three Kingdoms” series) in my live classes, so my native Mandarin-speaking teacher is able to impart even more insight to us that we can relate to as adult readers, whilst we consume comprehensible input at our own graded reader levels. Thank you DC team!!!

Pigfight..

I’ve been living in China for more than 8 years. I have yet to find an app like this. Each lesson not only helps you learn authentic pronunciation and diction, but also subtlety teaches you word order, grammar rules, and the importance of using the right tone. I’ve been looking for an app that can help my listing and reading for a long time...I’m so glad I’ve found you Du Chinese. If you are interested is seriously improving you listening and reading skills(and inadvertently improving your spoken Chinese as well) you must have this app.

Snabbtig..

I can’t recommend this app enough. Narration, simplified and traditional (I’m learning both), pinyin (I can’t read zhuyin), dictionary and translation all in one place and I don’t have to switch through countless settings or discover new tricks for how to make this lovely resource work.

TakenNic..

The organization and content of the app is superb and has greatly helped my listening and reading proficiency! I will be taking the HSK (Chinese Lever Proficiency) Test Level 5 and this app is my go to. It organizes stories bases on difficulty and labels EACH word based on how advanced it is. So great for studying! Besides that, I just love the stories that range from folktales, news, practical vocab articles, culture, and more. 100% recommend <3

rdjfizms..

Probably the most useful app for Chinese learners who want reading content.

AngryHep..

My only complaint is that they don’t have a du Spanish, French, Korean, Japanese.

Udedgug

I think this is the first time I’ve ever reviewed an app. Du Chinese is literally perfect. The format and personalization options (simplified/traditional characters, with/without pinyin or translation) are great, and the app is so intuitive to use. I really like that you can directly see the definition of each word and add them to a list to review later. I often use this app before bed. Thank you to the developers!

Grateful

One of the most interesting and efficient ways to make progress in Mandarin

ffhjyfcv..

Excellent app for practicing Mandarin reading and listening comprehension. They have a large library of context tailored to specific vocabulary levels, and frequently add new content. Reading mode lets you see the level of assistance you want (see not see translation, see not see pinyin), and all text is paired with high quality audio. I particularly enjoy using audio mode to loop a particular story chapter until it’s easy to understand.

Joseph

DuChinese incorporates interesting articles at all levels of study, and an intuitive and useful spaced repetition flash card system. It has raised my vocabulary so much

Jordan

Apps have no business being this good. The definitions they provide seem to be context-dependent, which is bananas. No idea how they pulled that off. I’ve searched quite hard for optimal ways to learn Chinese and this app is by far the best way that I’ve found. It’s hard to make this any better, but my suggestions would be: - occasional grammar explanations / alternate phrasings accessible by tapping some button near the English translation - option to open Pleco directly instead of the info page

Bosslad8..

It is on my top 2 list of Chinese apps. Definitely.

Rickboot

After spending a lot of time using character recognition apps I found I still had difficulty difficulty reading characters in actual reading situations. Reading and writing individual characters is still important but adding Du Chinese to my learning regimen has greatly strengthened my actually reading ability. Highly recommended.

Cricketm..

I am a certified teacher of Spanish and English and have studied language acquisition at the graduate level. As a language teaching professional, I think this may be the best digital resource for learning Chinese that is currently available. I used (and still use) Hello Chinese and Duolingo to build some vocab, but it is here that I get the quality meaningful input at the newbie and beginner levels that I need. So appreciate this app. It is well done. Highly recommended for any Chinese learner.

Frynick

The app is easy to use, and unlike many Chinese apps has simplified and traditional character sets to choose from. It’s organized well and has realistic dialogues. It doesn’t have the flashiness or motivational/challenge oriented approach some others have, but if you are self-motivated it’s wonderful.

iPhoneUs..

Amazing graded reader for all levels of Chinese learners. Newest update allows flash card to teleport into the story from which it was saved. Very helpful since I have over 2500 flash cards saved and sometimes forget the whole context

Zard1

I would HIGHLY recommend this app as a learning app for reading Chinese character texts. Easily access pinyin, definitions, translation of entire sentences. Listen to native speakers read the text to sharpen your reading skills! This app keeps getting better and better!

Brilliant near perfect realization of a language learning interface. Design is simple and clean, with an excellent interface for listening to and reading along with the chinese, and simple fingertip access to audio and translation at all times. use recommendations: The first step in using a story as a learning tool is to memorize it. The fixed structure of a memorized story is a memory palace of applied linguistic information. It is ok to to do this by rote to begin with, like learning a song or piece of music. Repeat repeat repeat... Pay close attention to rhythmic phrasing. Just as in music, the rhythmic phrase, not individual words and characters, is the best conveyor of meaning in a language. Playing a passage at a higher speed can help identify the rhythmic phrasing. Turn off the pinyin as soon as possible. Once you have a story memorized, the phonetic and meaning components to the chinese characters will begin to pop. For understanding characters, I also like to use the Pleco app, with its excellent and brilliant etymological Outlier dictionary add-ons, which logically unlock each character’s structure into its meaning and phonetic components, greatly aiding in character comprehension. Go ahead and skip ahead: the more complex stories are very accessible, and provide more linguistic structural context than the simple stuff. However, the memorization rule still holds... Development recommendations : A direct link from any character to its Outlier dictionary information would be perfect. More real stories. Children learn quickly by being captivated by magical and inventive tales. Adults do too. Final thoughts: Requires a subscription ($90 a year, or $12 for a month), but has free stories that you can take out for a test drive (and memorize) to experience the relief of this excellent user interface. Don’t hesitate: if you are at all interested in learning chinese, it is well worth paying for this excellent learning resource. Memorization: repeat, repeat, repeat... All children intuitively understand this, it is we adults who tend to discard this very simple rule....

Joe

I think it would be good to have a button that I click on and it takes me to a space where I can practice writing the character. Writing the character being a great way to get a more complete memory of the exact character. No need for testing the accuracy of the writing, just an option to practice writing it. This saves me from having to have a pen and paper to accomplish this, making using the phone even better! Secondly, it would be nice to have the audio of the sentence available, so the student can be sure they are pronouncing well. Thank you!

I got surprised when I downloaded it. I was thinking maybe there is some free courses but i was dumb wrong. There was nothing left without premium. Chinese sick developer
